This Sunday is our rescheduled Covered Bridge Ride. We'll be rolling across 6 bridges and stopping for photos at each. The pace will be conservative which mean this will be a great ride to come two up or to invite someone who is normally nervous about riding at our usual pace. The leaves are in the middle of changing so the scenery is absolutely beautiful.

Right now the forecast is calling for temps in the low 60's which should make for a comfortable ride. Just pack an extra layer and bring along a warm pair of gloves (in a pinch you can always stop at an outdoor apparel shop and pick up a pair of silk glove liners to wear under a summer weight glove).

The usual ride details apply: meet at BCM at 9:30 for coffee and donuts, ride meeting at 9:45 and rolling out at 10am sharp. Please arrive with a full tank of gas as we won't be stopping until lunch.

Covered Bridge Ride - Sunday 9/27

UPDATE: shop ride postponed to 10/11 due to rain.

Autumn is officially here which means it's time for our Covered Bridges Ride this Sunday. Our fearless ride leader and covered bridge historian Wes R hopes to be able to make it to the first half of the ride but promises to educate me as a sorry substitute in his absence.

The usual ride details are in effect: Meet at BCM for coffee and donuts at 9:30, ride meeting at 9:45, roll out at 10am sharp and please arrive with a full tank of gas.

We'll be taking it easy on the pace with this particular ride so it might be a good one to bring a passenger or the significant other on his or her own bike. Also, keep in mind that it's been unseasonably chilly this year so be sure to dress appropriately. As I always say - I've never regretted bringing too many layers but I've always regretted not bringing enough.

Going to the European Motorcycle Day? We are!

This Sunday is the European Motorcycle Day at the Lars Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, Mass. This a really fun lawn event that showcases classic European motorcycles. Come down and display your vintage or modern Ducati on the concourse! Again this year, the Duc Truck will be at the event offering demo rides on the latest lineup of bikes so be sure to bring your gear and license if you're not riding down.

We'll have a space just behind the demo truck so be sure to stop in and say hi. We'll have a few of our bikes on hand as well as a ton of apparel all on sale for the event.

Unfortunately because we have to haul bikes, apparel and Lucy's dog bowl down to Boston in the shop truck we won't be able to lead a ride down to the event. Our September 27th Covered Bridge shop ride is still on though. We'll have full details posted next week.

So we're going to postpone the ride two weeks until September 13th where we'll ride down to the Museum Of Transportation's European Motorcycle Day.

Shop Ride - 113 All the Way!

Well, the forecast doesn't look outstanding for Sunday but I think we may do okay. Or maybe we'll get poured on! I have no idea any more!! Regardless, we're on for this Sunday's rescheduled shop ride. We'll be taking 113 all the way up to Gilead then heading west and then south through the White Mountains National Forest.

The usual ride plans are in effect - meet at BCM at with a full tank of gas at 9:30 for coffee and donuts, pre-ride meeting at 9:45 and rolling out at 10am. Hope to see you there. Oh and bring raingear, if we all have it then we probably won't need it!

Ride Report - Hell Or High Water Ride!

"OK, we're doing this damn ride to the Shelburne Museum on Sunday June 28th come hell or high water. "

The forecast was all over the place in the days leading up to Sunday's ride. Early in the week it looked like rain in NH and dry in VT. Middle of the week it was rain in both NH and VT. By Sat we were back to rain and dry. But like I said, I was going no matter what.

When I got back from the coffee and donuts run I was met by Micah on his 848. Within a couple minutes we were joined by Mark on his ST3, Marco on his MTS1100, and Shane on his 1098S. At the last minute Nick rolled in on his MS4R. Oh yeah, it wasn't yat raining! The forecast that morning called for overcast skies but no rain in Burlington so I was optimistic for a good day.

We rolled out and headed down Meredith Center Road to hook up with 104 and then 4 towards Lebanon. I know these aren't the most exciting roads for sport bikes but I wanted to get to the good stuff sooner than later. After a little misdirection on my part we made it to Route 14. In Bethel we took Rochester Mountain Road over to the next valley and onto Route 100. Scenery wise, the section of 100 from Granville to Warren is my favorite. The road is a little rough in spots though. Definitely time for Vermont to send the paving crews out! The rough pavement didn't seem to slow anyone down however and we made it to Warren in record time ;)

At the Warren Country Store we met up with Dan on his MS4R and Julie on her BMW (I'm sorry I forget the model). After a delicious lunch we got back on the bikes and headed north a little ways to Route 17 the App Gap. Unfortuantely we just couldn't avoid traffic and some of the best corners were spent behind cages :( We stopped for a couple photo ops at the top and then headed down the other side to make our way to Shelburne.

As we rolled into the museum's parking lot we were met by another BCM customer taking pictures of our group. Otto is a huge fan of Ducati's but was unable to ride his MS2R1000 that day. He's promised to send me the photos when he downloads them and I'll add them here when he does. After we downdressed and got our wallets out to pay for our entry to the exhibit Otto suprised everyone by presenting us with tickets! Thanks again Otto it was very generous of you. I plan to return the kindness next time your in our neck of the woods.

The exhibit was pretty fun. Lots of old bikes (Ariel, BMW, Whizzer, Ossa, Maico, etc), some great custom bikes (Goldammer, Roland Sands, Arlen Ness, etc) and even a few Italian brands including a Desmosedici on loan from Ducati North America. We were duped into walking the entire site to see a few more bikes that were located in other buildings but that's okay the museum is amazing and well worth a walk around.

After an ice cream break we suited up for the ride back. The museum was cool but I have to say I was really enjoying the roads we were on! Though it was overcast we still had yet to run into any rain. We headed south back down 116 but this time we passed the App Gap and continued south for the less traveled Middlebury Gap (Dan frightened us with stories of dirt and moss on Lincoln Gap!). On the other side we hit 100 and headed south towards Route 107. Along the way we stopped quickly at Emerson Motor Works. Wow, what a cool place. Dan is good friends with the owner and got us a tour of the property. It's difficult to paint the picture of cool this place - just take a trip there yourself.

After the tour we began the final push home. Dan and Julie were going to break off with a honk and a wave as we passed Quechee. The rest of us had decided to jump on the highway at White River Junction and burn home. Good thing too, it started to rain right around Grantham.

I had a great time. The museum was fun, the roads and company were great and the weather finally gave us a break! Looking forward to the next ride...

Hell Or High Water Ride - Sunday June 28th

OK, we're doing this damn ride to the Shelburne Museum on Sunday June 28th come hell or high water. Here's the details:

Ride leaves at 9am from BCM, coffee and donuts at 8:30.

Lunch at noon at the Warren Country Store.

Shelburne Museum at approx 2pm.

The route home will be dictated by the group and the weather. We can get home fast or take our time. I'm committed to riding as long as you guys want.

Oh and I bought some rain gear so it's probably not gonna rain on Sunday so cowboy up you Sally's and lets go ride!

Shop Ride this Sunday (June 14th)

The Shelburne Museum has a motorcycle exhibit. I don't need much of an excuse to ride through Vermont but this seems like it could be a good one. From their site:
"Full Throttle focuses on the evolution of motorcycle design and celebrates the artistry of a mode of transportation that inspired a subculture all its own,” said Kory Rogers, associate curator.

Exhibited on all three levels of Shelburne Museum’s historic Round Barn gallery, Full Throttle is organized into three thematic sections.

• “Wide Open and Wild: Racing Machines” examines the role of racing tracks as testing grounds for motorcycle performance and design improvements.

• “Classic Cool: Vintage Motorcycles” features iconic examples of such makes as Indian, Harley Davidson and Triumph and explores how many of the improvements born on the track translated into hallmarks for specific brands.

• “Choppers: Art of the Custom Ride” explores the evolution of building choppers from early models where parts were chopped off to jettison weight to today’s custom rides that elevate bike building to an art form that reflects the personality of the individual rider. This section include examples of regional styles, as well as compares “old school” choppers to contemporary themed or fantasy bikes.

This is going to a long ride - by it's most direct route Shelburne is 150+ miles from the shop. For this reason we'll be departing one hour earlier than our normal time. Coffee and donuts at 8:30, pre-ride meeting at 8:45, roll out at 9am sharp. I'm figuring on my route taking us about 3 hours over some of my favorite VT roads. Please note that there will be a brief section of dirt though it is a very hard packed, frequently traveled road so it should be no big deal. We'll stop for lunch at the Warren Store (great sandwiches, sweet location). Cost to view the exhibit is $20. I don't know how long it will take to view the exhibit. If someone wants to leave early or stay late of course you are welcome to. I will be riding back to the shop and plan to get back before the sun sets - I hate to leave you guys riding home in the dark. If we have extra time there are some fun roads we can hit and if we are pressed for time we can also burn down 89. I'd plan on being somewhat flexible!

I should make note that the 14th is the first Sunday of Laconia Bike Week. ~~I am going to look into this and see if it makes more sense for us to meet somewhere in Tilton instead of at the shop.~~ Sunday is also the last day of the Loudon Classic so if you are interested in club racing maybe you want to skip this ride. The New England Ducati Owners Club is hosting their second annual Meet In The Middle Ride on Sunday May 17th. This is a unique event in that groups of people from all over New England will be meeting up for rides that will eventually meet in the middle of New England for lunch at Curtis' BBQ in Putney, Vermont. The New Hampshire leg of the ride will be leaving from our parking lot at 9am. We'll have coffee and donuts available at 8:15. As usual, please arrive with a full tank of gas.

Shop Ride - Sunday, April 26th

Our first shop ride of the season is just a couple weeks away. If you're a racing fan you know LRRS racing begins that weekend as well (along with MotoGP in Motegi and WSBK in Assen!). Since the roads are still a little rough we're gonna take it easy on this ride and do a 60 mile route from the shop to a breakfast spot in Northwood and then to the track to catch some of the races. Club racing is a lot of fun to watch. Regular guys like you and I putting it out there for the love of motorcycles! We'll stop in at the BCM garage to check in on our service manager Kyle who's racing a built up 749R and then head over to corners 3 and 6 to see the action up close.

Ride Details:
Coffee and donuts will be available at 9:15 at the shop. At 9:45 we'll gather for a ride meeting and we'll roll at 10:00 am SHARP. Please arrive at the shop with a full tank of gas as we will not be stopping for gas until after breakfast (approx 75 miles).

Winter Blues Seminars

The snowbanks are piled high which means it's time for BCM's annual Winter Blues seminars!

This year we've changed things up a bit and are excited to announce our first Motor Building Seminar. A small group of intrepid Ducatisti will follow along as our award winning* service manager Kyle Thompson takes a pair of empty cases and builds them up to a completed engine. The weekend's topics will include engine tear down, inspection and measurement of internal components, engine balancing and blueprinting, transmission shimming and engagement, crankshaft overhauling, setting piston to cylinder squish, cam timing and much, much more. This class will have something for everyone - whether you're just interested in learning more about the "magic" happening between your alternator cover and your clutch housing or you are contemplating a complete overhaul of your engine you will gain valuable knowledge and insight from one of the most talented Ducati technicians around. Because of the complexity of the subject matter we are limiting the class size to 6 students.

Of course we are still offering our maintenance seminar. This year we have decided to combine the 2 valve and 4 valve classes into one weekend. On Saturday, half the class will split up and go over 2 and 3 valve specific maintenance items while the other half will go over 4 valve stuff. On Sunday, the class will come back together and go over front and rear suspension setup with our Ohlins certified techs.

Everyone is feeling the hit budget-wise so our last change is perhaps the best! We've reduced the cost of attending our seminars - this year the maintenance seminar is just $150 and the engine building class is $250. As they say on TV, "Wait, there's more!" If you are a returning student of one of our previous seminars (within the last three years) you can take an additional $50 off the cost as well.

Ducati unveils the new Desmosedici GP9

Against the snowy backdrop of the Malga Zeledria plane, at the foot of the Dolomites Ducati introduced it's newest MotoGp race bike - the Desmosedici GP9. What's new you ask?

Claudio Dominicelli, CEO of Ducati Corse and Direct of Ducati Products offers this hint at the year to come: "the GP9 is characterised by a major change in the chassis, with the switch from the traditional Ducati steel trellis chassis with a carbon fibre frame that brings the upper part of the engine up to the level of the steering column. It is a change we have thought about and tested for a long time, firstly with Vittoriano (Guareschi), who is always our first point of reference. He gave his approval to the new system and then the official riders tested it at Barcelona. We won the MotoGP World Championship with the trellis frame so it clearly a very effective design but we have been looking to take another step forward that can help us overcome some of the problems we’ve had, specifically with the MotoGP bike. Amongst the other updates on the GP9 one of the most relevant is an evolution of the engine management system, with a new combination of airbox and mapping that should provide a flatter power curve and improve rideability, as well as improving outright power, which currently remains more or less the same as last year."
